numbered, and signed by the artist. The paper used is made of 100% cotton and printed
with water-based acrylic ink. The process of making them is quite classic, and
was developed in Europe & Japan. Despite modern processes, screenprinting remains
an effective way to make printed reproductions. The screen/stencils are made by
stretching a piece of silk/polyester tightly over a frame. Then coated with a liquid
emulsion that hardens when exposed to light. A film positive is laid on top of the
emulsion which blocks the light from permanently harding it. The screen is then
rinsed with water and is ready to have ink pushed through it. For every color, a
different screen must be created. A design could be comprised of one color or as
many as 12+. A squeegee is used to push the ink through the screen/stencil and onto
the paper or surface to be printed. The ink can only be applied one color at a time,
dried and then the process can be repeated with the next color. Several days are needed
to complete a print edition the uses more then one color.
Print runs range from 10 in an edition up to 5000. For storage and safety of these prints,
an acid-free mat or backing board should be used.
